Mike Pettine’s winter departure from the Vikings’ staff was classified as retirement. But the veteran staffer later said he was not sure if he would return to coaching. Months later, we have more clarity.

Pettine is joining the Cowboys’ staff as a senior defensive assistant, the team announced Monday. This reunites Pettine with both Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

The well-traveled staffer joined Schottenheimer as a coordinator on Rex Ryan’s Jets teams. Schottenheimer was in place as Jets OC from 2006-2011, while Pettine was the team’s DC from 2009-12. This period brought back-to-back AFC championship game appearances, helping Pettine land the Browns’ 2014 HC position.

Years after become one of the many pre-Kevin Stefanski Browns hires shown the door in short order, Pettine linked up with Parker. The current Cowboys DC’s first NFL job came as Packers quality control assistant in 2019, when Pettine was in place as Green Bay’s DC.

Parker had attempted to talk Pettine out of retirement once he landed the Cowboys’ DC gig, ESPN.com’s Todd Archer tweets. Months later, the two will reunite. Pettine, 60, joins a Cowboys team that has struggled defensively. After ranking last in 2025, Dallas’ defense — despite a host of offseason investments — sits 26th in points allowed and 31st in yardage yielded. They are 32nd in EPA per play through five games.

Schottenheimer said (via the Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins) the team would have hired Pettine regardless of its Week 5 result — a disappointing home loss to the Baker Mayfield-less Buccaneers — calling the veteran coach a front-seven expert. With Parker’s expertise coming in the secondary, Pettine will help complement his former protege. The Cowboys need all the help they can get defensively, as the team’s major investments — for the likes of Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, DaRon Bland and Caleb Downs — have not produced much improvement yet.

The latest Pittsburgh-to-Dallas trade import, Joey Porter Jr. missed Week 5 because of an illness. Porter started in his first Cowboys game, doing so days after being acquired from the Steelers. The Cowboys also only have five sacks in five games, with no player having tallied more than one. Pettine will undoubtedly be tasked with helping Parker’s staff coax better work from the pass rush.

Pettine’s most recent job came as assistant head coach on the Vikings’ staff. Minnesota hired Pettine in 2022 and retained him following Ed Donatell’s one-and-done DC stay. Brian Flores agreed to retain Pettine, but an offseason appearance on the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show (h/t ESPN.com’s Kevin Seifert) brought a Pettine confirmation he and the successful Minnesota DC did not see eye to eye. Pettine spent the 2025 season helping the Vikings’ offense. This will be Pettine’s ninth NFL employer since he broke into the league in 2002.
